Welcome Back!

The fall semester is here! Welcome back, Panthers!

The Disciplinary Comprehension (DisCo) Lab is kicking off the semester with some new projects:

Exploring the Effects of Text Complexity in Civic Literacy

Dr. McCarthy, along with Drs. Scott Crossley (Applied Linguistics) and Joe Feinberg (Middle & Secondary Ed) received a Research on the Challenges of Acquiring Language & Literacy Seed Grant. Civics texts are infamously complex, but simplifying them can have potentially harmful effects. This project examines how different types of text simplification influences students' comprehension and metacomprehension of complex civics information.

Generative Writing in Content Courses: AI Approaches

Dr. McCarthy and Dr. Min Kyu Kim (Learning Technologies) received a Teaching Mini-Grant from Georgia State University Center for Excellence in Teaching, Learning, & Online Education (CETLOE). This work implements writing-focused educational technologies into a content course to examine how generative writing + automated feedback can support learning in authentic classroom settings.

We are also continuing a number of other projects related to how reading and writing varies across contexts and across learners. Learn more about our research here.

We are looking for undergraduate and graduate research assistants to assist us with these projects and are also accepting applications for Master's and PhD students for Fall 2022. Learn more here.
