As a PhD student in the Disciplinary Comprehension lab, you will get hands-on experience in the fields of cognition (cognitive psychology, cognitive science), educational psychology, and learning sciences.
Students in the lab develop research materials and conduct studies in the lab, in the classroom, and online. They have the opportunity to learn a variety of research methodologies (e.g., experimental and quasi-experimental studies, think-aloud protocols, eyetracking, semi-structured interviews) and analysis techniques (e.g., hand coding of open-ended responses and essays, computational linguistic analysis, descriptive and non-parametric analyses, inferential statistics, simple machine learning).
Interested applicants are encouraged to email Dr. McCarthy directly.
You do not need a Master's degree to apply for the PhD program. Students can apply for our concurrent program in which students earn their Master's degree on the way to their PhD.
