New pub on Spelling and Grammar Checkers, now in Assessing Writing

Most of us are familiar with the lines that appear when we misspell a word, but does that feedback help us become better writers? Unsurprisingly, research suggests that spelling and grammar checks alone are not enough to improve overall writing, but can these checkers support better writing when combined with writing strategy feedback? Or does providing "easy" feedback misdirect students to attend to the wrong things? We examined these questions in the context of an automated writing evaluator:
