Our chapter, titled The Design Implementation Framework: Guiding Principles for the Redesign of a Reading Comprehension Intelligent Tutoring System, describes how we used an emerging approach, the Design Implementation Framework, to guide our redesign of the iSTART-3 intelligent tutoring system. We draw upon extant approaches (ADDIE, DBIR) and add to them by considering the role of experimental manipulations as well as the tension between usability and experience and learning outcomes.
