New Pub Alert! Improving Reading Comprehension in Spanish Using iSTART-E: A Pilot Study

DisCo's director, Dr. Katie McCarthy, worked with a team in Concepción, Chile to examine the effects of a iSTART-Español, an intelligent tutoring system for Spanish speakers. iSTART-E uses natural language processing to provide automated instruction and practice to help students develop their reading comprehension skills.


This pilot study showed that practicing reading comprehension strategies improved students' self-explanation skill and reading comprehension test performance.


The article appears in a special issue of International Journal of Computer-Assisted Language Learning and Teaching (IJCALLT) dedicated to research presented at WorldCALL 2018.
