DisCo's director, Dr. Katie McCarthy, worked with a team in Concepción, Chile to examine the effects of a iSTART-Español, an intelligent tutoring system for Spanish speakers. iSTART-E uses natural language processing to provide automated instruction and practice to help students develop their reading comprehension skills.
This pilot study showed that practicing reading comprehension strategies improved students' self-explanation skill and reading comprehension test performance.
